Visiting Natural Falls State Park
What to know, what to do, and where to stay nearby.
Photos shown here are placeholders. We're gathering real images of this attraction.
Natural Falls State Park is home to one of the most photographed waterfalls in Oklahoma — a dramatic 77-foot cascade that drops into a lush, fern-filled canyon tucked into the Ozark foothills. It is the kind of place that feels older and quieter than you expect from a state park. And at just 15 minutes from Ferncrest Flint Creek, it is the easiest half-day trip on your list.
What to Do
Everything Natural Falls State Park has to offer
The main draw is the waterfall itself. A short, paved walk from the parking area leads to the upper viewing platform, where you get a direct view of the falls and the cool air rising off the canyon. It is accessible for all ages and a five-minute experience if you want it to be. The longer path winds down into the canyon floor for a closer look at the base of the falls.
Beyond the falls, a small network of wooded trails loops around the upper ridge. The Dripping Springs Trail and the Fern Trail are both short, shaded, and perfect for a slow walk through oak, hickory, and hemlock forest. Keep an eye out for wild orchids and trillium in spring.
The park also offers picnic pavilions, a small yurt village for overnight stays, and a grassy field perfect for games or a lazy afternoon. It is not a huge park, but it is well kept, uncrowded, and one of those places that rewards slowing down.

Why It's Worth the Trip
More than a pin on the map.
Most Oklahoma waterfalls are seasonal trickles. Natural Falls runs year-round, fed by a spring above the canyon, and the scale of the drop is genuinely surprising the first time you see it. It is a perfect introduction to the wilder, greener side of the Ozarks and a natural companion to a stay at Ferncrest Flint Creek. You can be there and back before lunch with time left over for the creek.
Seasonal Guide
Best time to visit Natural Falls State Park
Spring
Spring is prime time at Natural Falls. Rain and snowmelt push the waterfall to peak volume, and the canyon floor fills in with ferns and wildflowers. Trails are lush and cool even on warmer days.
Summer
Summer brings a full green canopy and a welcome cool-down at the base of the falls. The canyon stays several degrees cooler than the surrounding area, making a mid-day visit comfortable. Arrive in the morning to avoid weekend crowds.
Fall
Oklahoma fall color is underrated, and the canyon frames it beautifully. Oranges, reds, and golds line the trails from mid-October through early November. The trails are quieter and the air is crisp — arguably the best season to visit.
Winter
The park stays open through winter and the falls often continue to run, occasionally freezing into striking ice formations on the coldest days. Quieter, starker, and completely different in character from the rest of the year.
